Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psalms 1:1-3

This morning as I was out walking, I noticed newly planted plants of all varieties along the exercise pathway. Some of the new plantings were thriving and healthy while others were dried, shriveled and dead. I thought to myself, “some one needs to adjust the sprinklers so all of the plants can get the water they need to live.” Then it dawned on me that many of the plants that comprise my surroundings in California are not native to California. In fact, California’s climate resembles that of a desert climate, thus most of the plants are not created to survive in this climate. Most plants would not live were it not for man-made irrigation.

Then I thought of the words of Peter wherein he said we are strangers & pilgrims in this world (1 Peter 2:11). In other words, like the plants that have been transplanted into the arid region of California that die when they don’t receive steady doses of water, so will the child of God wither and die if he or she does not receive steady doses of the water of the Word of God.

So if our lives are feeling parched, withered and dry, it’s time to soak our souls with the Word of God. Every child of God is promised refreshing from the presence of the Lord (Acts 3:19). So what are we waiting for? It’s time to return to the source of our strength and drink deep from the well of His Word.

Jesus, speaking to the woman at the well in Samaria promised, “… whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14). His promise still holds true in 2009. Come, drink.
